What is answer engine optimization?

What answer engine optimization asks of your content

An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers are common examples. When they use the web, they look for pages and passages that fit the question, and may name the sources they used.

AEO is the work of making your pages the ones they pull from, and it starts with the writing. Each page should take one question and answer it in the first lines, in a sentence that still makes sense when quoted alone. The detail follows below. Many B2B pages do the reverse. They open with a story about the market, and the answer sits low on the page, where a busy buyer and a machine can both miss it.

A software firm that sells to banks shows the issue. Its pricing page says only “talk to us”, and its comparison page opens with a long mission statement. When a buyer asks an assistant how firms like it usually charge, the assistant finds nothing to quote. The fix is plain. Say near the top how pricing usually works and what it depends on, in words a stranger could repeat.

How it differs from SEO and GEO

SEO, search engine optimization, aims to rank your pages in a list of results. AEO aims to get you named in a direct answer. GEO, generative engine optimization, is a close cousin aimed at AI tools that write their own responses. People use the three names loosely, and the work behind them is mostly the same.

Much of SEO still matters. Assistants often draw on pages that search engines already index and trust, so a site that cannot be crawled, or that has thin pages, starts behind. What changes is what you plan around. SEO work is usually organized by keyword and page. AEO work is organized by the buyer’s question and the passage that answers it. Outside sources count too. Reviews, directories, press and other sites that describe your firm can affect which names an assistant includes.

Be wary of anyone who promises a placement. Assistants change how they answer, and the same question can bring a different answer on another day. Clear pages improve your odds, but nobody can sell you a spot.

Where to start

Begin with what assistants say about you now, before you change anything.

  • Write down the questions your buyers ask before they talk to sales, and put each one to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers.
  • Note which sources get named, and whether your firm appears, is described correctly or is missing.
  • Pick the pages that should answer those questions and check that the answer sits in the first lines.
  • Confirm that search engines can crawl those pages and that nothing important hides behind a form.

Our SEO, AEO and GEO work runs search and AI answers as one program, measured honestly.

Questions people ask next

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly. The two names describe one aim from slightly different angles. AEO stresses being the answer to a direct question, and GEO stresses being included in text that AI tools write. Most teams run a single program and use whichever name their audience knows.

Can you pay to be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Outside of ads, there is no reliable way to buy a place inside an assistant's answer. What works is publishing clear, accurate pages, keeping your facts the same everywhere they appear, and earning mentions from sources the assistants already trust.

How do you know whether AEO is working?

Ask assistants the same buyer questions on a regular schedule and record whether you are named and how you are described. Add referral visits and enquiries that mention an assistant. Answers vary from day to day, so read the trend over weeks rather than any single result.
